Answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What to do if Ι test positive while in Greece?
If you test positive for COVID-19 while in Greece you must self-isolate for 5 days from the date of the positive test result or until a RAT (Rapid Antigen Test) shows negative. If you are symptomatic you must continue to self-isolate until you have shown no symptoms for three days. At the end of this period, you will need to take a RAT. If the result is positive you should take a further test 48 hours later. You can end your self-isolation once you have a negative RAT result.
The above guidance does not apply in the case of strains of special interest or variants under surveillance. These cases will be assessed by the EMEA (Greek health authority) and appropriate instructions will be given.
Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to self-isolate in your current accommodation, or Greek authorities will ask you to self-isolate in a state-provided quarantine hotel. The expense of the accommodation in quarantine hotels is covered by the Greek state. Local authorities will be able to offer further advice on self-isolation requirements.
If you do not self-isolate or quarantine when required you may be fined by the Hellenic Police. The fine could be as much as €5000. You should comply with any requirement to self-isolate or quarantine.
Plan ahead and make sure you:
- can access money
- understand what your insurance will cover
- can make arrangements to extend your stay and be away for longer than planned
What happens if an infection is confirmed at a hotel?
In the event of confirmed infection, close contacts of the case will be transferred to a separate quarantine accommodation at the expense of the Greek state. The remaining guests will continue their holidays.
Who will cover the expenses of the management and hospitalization of a COVID 19 case?
Access to all required health services will be provided by the Greek State free of charge to visitors with no insurance coverage. In the case of EU citizens, all related costs will be covered and then handled according to EU rules and Guidance Notes.
If someone misses their return flight because of illness or symptoms or misses prepaid accommodation is there a refund policy or other framework that could cover expenses?
Greece will cover transfer to hospital and medical costs as well as stay in a quarantined hotel if needed. We urge airlines, travel agents, and hotels to offer maximum flexibility during this time of regulatory uncertainty.
I can't find my COVID-related question here, what should I do?
Restrictions, testing requirements, and mandatory quarantine measures are reported and updated based on official information provided by health and government authorities, and are subject to change – sometimes with little or no advance notice – according to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) guidelines.
For answers to questions not found above, you are advised to contact your closest Embassy or consulate prior to travel or consult directly with the airport.
